Working Party – Wednesday 4 May

We’re launching a hands on working session on Wednesday May 4th between 4.30pm and 7.30pm and will be supervised by one of the gardening team.

Meet at The Hollies car park at 4.30pm but if you’re arriving later just follow the signs. You’ll need stout shoes and gardening gloves plus secateurs and a spade (if possible). Refreshments will be provided.

Remember that helping for even half an hour can make a huge difference and will be greatly appreciated!

First Post!

The Hollies are situated in Weetwood, Leeds, and are linked to Meanwood Park.

In 1921 the property and extensive grounds were presented to Leeds by George Brown in memory of his son, Major Harold Brown listed as killed in action in 1918. The house was used as a sanatorium for children suffering tuberculosis, while the grounds became a public park.

Upon entering The Hollies from Weetwood Lane, there is a formally planted area with native and exotic tree species. This is set alongside seating areas and open spaces. The gardens contain an amazing variety of species, including Pines, Maples and Sequoias, with lots of Rhododendrons and ferns thriving in the moist soil.

Sparrow Hawks and Kingfishers have been seen, and the very occasional deer.
